NFTs and Blockchain Key Terms

Here’s a glossary of key terms used in the NFT space that you should familiarize yourself with before getting started.

Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs)

NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) are one-of-a-kind digital items with blockchain-based ownership. Digital art, collectibles, virtual reality items, crypto domain names, ownership records for physical assets, and other NFTs are examples. Read our CEO’s ever-popular overview of NFTs and how we got here for more information.

A blockchain is a digitally distributed ledger that makes recording transactions and data across a network easier. It’s similar to a distributed or decentralized database. Elemint support the blockchain ERC-721A.

Ethereum / ETH

Ethereum is a blockchain, and ETH is the currency used to conduct Ethereum transactions.

Gas fees

Consider gas fees to be the costs of Ethereum blockchain transactions. Gas prices are determined by supply and demand across the network, not by Elemint (blockchain).

Crypto wallet

A cryptocurrency wallet is a software or hardware device that allows users to store and retrieve digital items such as cryptocurrency and NFTs.

Wallet address

Also referred to as your “public key.” Your wallet’s address is one-of-a-kind. When sending cryptocurrency or NFTs, this is the address that people will use. Your NFTs and cryptocurrency are stored on the blockchain under your wallet address, not in your wallet. Only the key to that address is stored in your software or hardware wallet. Your Ethereum address begins with a “0x.” An ENS domain can also be used.

The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is a domain naming system based on the Ethereum blockchain. ENS domains resolve to wallet addresses, meaning you can send NFTs and cryptocurrency to them.

Private key

A string of numbers (often 256 characters long) that serves as your signature for approving blockchain transactions.

Seed phrase

Your seed phrase is a collection of words (usually between 12 and 24 words) that can be used to recover your cryptocurrency if you forget your password or lose access to your wallet. Find your seed phrase and back it up somewhere safe, preferably multiple times, when you first start trading with your wallet. When you create a crypto wallet, you’ll be given a seed phrase to write down. This is how you can back up your key without having to hold the numbers in your hand. A “mnemonic phrase” or “secret recovery phrase” is another name for it. Don’t put your seed phrase in the cloud.

A collection, like a store or gallery, is a collection of NFTs. Don’t be confused if you hear someone refer to an Elemint collection as a store or gallery; they’re the same thing. To keep things simple, we call it a collection.

Smart contract

Decentralized code that runs on blockchains is known as smart contracts. Smart contracts are used to mint NFT, buy and sell NFTs on Elemint.
